When I took the steering box apart on my 550 I found that it is pretty much junk. The sector gears are bad and the steering nut/rack is broken in 2 pieces. What parts are still available? Did I hear that some Ford boxes fit? Which model Fords? I think replacement might be better on this one.

I would grab that one from Kent for sure. He is a good person to deal with. I just rebuilt my box and it was easy. I did have to by a Ford shaft and cut it off and have welded to get the right gear and steering shaft combination. Email me if you have any questions.

Maibach Tractors and Korves Olivers both have parts - give them a call to see what they have available.

I rebuilt Dad"s 550 steering box last year - The biggest problem we had was that the bronze bushings in the sector gear caps are not available.

The box was built by Saginaw (I think). It would be worth checking for other tractors that used a Saginaw manual steering box.

Or you could update to power steering while you have it apart. (grin)

Good luck,

Nathaniel

There is a 550 steering assembly on eBay right now...
Kent is a good guy to buy from.

there is also a new/old stock steering shaft for a 550 power steering unit...

A Ford unit will work but,you will need to modify it slightly. This a manual unit i'm speaking of.The Ford unit also has bigger size coloumn shaft in it and will require a Ford steering wheel.I just recently took a worn out Ford gear off a Super 55 and replaced it with a used Oliver unit from Kent Gordon in Texas. His # is 903-729-8344.He is a good honest guy to deal with.He takes his apart and inspects and repairs them before selling them.
