My dad just picked up what he thought was an Oliver 550, until we looked at the serial tag. Found out it's the Cockshutt version painted greeen somewhere along the line. I think it's a 1962, if they used the same numbering system on the Cockshutts and Olivers. It's a model number 45-0725, sn. 127454. Runs great, sheet metal is nice. Has the drawbar and hydraulic valve. Tires are decent, some weatherchecking. Came with a hydraulic front blade and a back blade and tire chains. Question: Is the Cockshutt version any more valuable due to rarity? Also, we are in need of the locking pins to attach the drawbar to the tractor. Could also use rear wheel weights if anyone has any. We are interested in selling the front blade with the bracketry and hoses if anyone's interested. BTW, we are located in the Metro Detroit area of Michigan. Thanks in advance.

That's my oliver/cockshutt 550 in the second pic
the answer is ..... ..... ..... ..
They were painted both all red and creme/red
creme /red is older the tags look very similar to the oliver Id tags No difference in serial number sequence between Oliver/Cockshutt and white if they were Oliver built I have a copy of the build sheet and it has red COCKSHUTT stamped on the tag thats the only difference from the build sheets

By the Way my tractor looks much better now I'll post some pics in the spring when i get it out of the barn I had decals made at Dumont but still need to send them the proper artwork for the 550 decal

Well, this just gets curiouser and curiouser. Now we've got two "Oliver-Cockshutt" 550 pics, one in red and the other in cream and red. So which one of those is right? Its looking more and more like we'll need to commission a "blue ribbon" panel of quasi-experts, to tour the country on a "fact-finding mission", looking at various tractors and talking to folks (over expensive dinners, of course), to try to get to the bottom of all this. Contingent, of course, on getting a government grant to finance the junket.

I'm confused. Its an Oliver serial number, but my understanding is that the Cockshutt versions of the Oliver 550 (small utility tractor about the size of an 8N Ford) were identical except for the paint, and there was no difference in the serial numbers. The 550 "Cockshutt- Cockshutt" was a row-crop type tractor, completely different. So how do you know it was a Cockshutt version of the Oliver 550? Maybe some red paint lurking beneath the green? You can't tell from the serial number. I have an Oliver 550 that needs an overhaul and some paint- maybe I'll just paint it Cockshutt colors and make a few grand.

Yes, there's red paint underneath the horribly repainted green. Also has Canada on the serial tag. I don't remember exactly what it says as it's at my Dad's.

It would have a Cockshutt tag on it, saying built by Oliver or something to that nature. The tag wouldn't be identical to the Oliver tag, although the number itself would fall right inline wth the Oliver models.

Serial number shows " 63 Oliver" on the list at the left. Too many didgits for a Cockshutt.

Did you see the one Summerix had advertised up in the NE part of Michigan? 73 model if memory serves me right. Extremely low hours, wanted $7500 for it. Oliver by the way,not Cockshutt.

I went to Ontario to look at one for sale years ago. It was in excellent condition. It was original and was the Cockshutt colors. Tin was harvest gold and the the remainder cockshutt red. I wished that I had purchased it. I would take it back to it's original colors and it will be a real show piece.

When I was younger, we had a 1958 Oliver 550 that we used to mow grass and plow snow. As I got older and wasn't around as much, my dad needed a tractor my mom could drive, so we sold the 550 and bought a JD compact diesel. He's been itching for a couple years now to find another 550. We found this one about a half hour from home, and the price was excellent. I'm surprised it was for sale as long as it was. Now that I have my own house and property, I know this tractor will never leave the family. Hopefully it can returned to it's proper color someday!

You lucky &%$#*%$!

Yep, the Cockshutts are worth more and I'd love to find one. I too just bought an Oliver 550 but it's too old to be a Cockshutt.

It may be tough to get decals for it but it'll look great if you restore it!
