And I have a million questions.

I've ordered an operator's manual and a service manual so that should cover some of my questions. Could any of you recommend another book with good 550 info? Maybe one with good pictures of 550s.

I was reading an Oliver book that I have and it mentioned a special model for "grounds keeping" with turf tires from the factory. How would someone know if they had one of those models? The one I bought has turf tires and the guy figures it always has.

That rear handle was used later than that and was always an option. You can not go by the handle.

Thanks J.

I'll check the serial number when I get it.

I'd think the rear handle would be more convenient anyways.

Your tractor is not an Oliver 550 Turf Special.

Oliver advertised a mobile home special, and a turf special, in the late 60's and 70's. The turf special had the plastic grill and 7.50-10 front tires and 18.4-16A rear tires.

Thanks for the reply, that gets that out of my head.

Is it true that only a 58 would have the PTO lever behind the 3 pth lever? If so mine would have to be a 58.

Just curious what was a "mobile home special"? What options did it carry?

You can contact the Floyd County Museum for build card info that may be deciphered to see if the "special equipment" model is original. 641-228-1099

Thanks for the reply AB.

I've ordered the operators and service manuals from here at YT. I may take Fernan's advice and order the parts manual as well and maybe I'll get it from the museum.

The build card would certainly be neat to have as well.

Thanks for the info

Congrats Maplestone -
Did you get it from Les? The 550 is a great utility rig. Drop me a line and I will share what I know. See link below for other areas of consideration.

Thanks ShepFL,

No, it"s not Les" 550. :o)

From reading that first article my 550 might be a "58. I forgot to get the serial # when I bought it but the PTO lever is a big one behind the 3 pt control on the RH side. The author of that article said that makes it a 58.

I might still have your email on my home puter. I"ll drop you a line later.

When making repairs a parts book sure comes in handy. Few mechanics left who had worked on these old tractors the parts book come in handy ordering parts so you and the person on the other end both know what's talked about. Another help are the pictured parts breakdowns often helping put what goes where in the proper order. Every so often an IT manual may give you another veiw point upon a problem. Play safely and god luck with your new tractor. It looks good. Fernan

Thanks Fernan,

Never really thought of the expoded diagrams that the aprts manual has. Maybe I'll order it later. I do like the IT manuals too but I figured I'd start with the Oliver manual.

Hope to talk again soon.

Thanks

That's a great article! Wish I would have read it before I went to look at it. Oh well, what's done is done.

According to that article I may have a 58 not a 59. The PTO lever is behind the 3 pth lever on the RH side. I didn't get the serial # when I bought it but I will definetly check it out good when I get it home.
