OC 46 3G runs badly

Hello,

I have a OC 46 3 cylinder gasoline crawler which has not been running well for a long time. In fact, ever since I got it, it never ran properly but to many other projects kept me from attending to this machine.

When I first got it it ran, but it never sounded happy. It did not run smooth and it always backfire a little. Lately, it only runs for about 10 to 15 minutes. It seems that when the water temperature reaches about 200 degree F, the engine stops.

I got it about 4 years ago and ever since, it needs choking for long time before the engine stays on without it. Depending on the outside temperature, this can be anywhere from one to four minutes.

Last summer, I changed the spark plugs, spark plug cables and rotor. This did not make a difference.

Any suggestions?
Thank you very much,
Johannes

Owning 5 of these things. Are running on 12 or 6 volt battery?. If it's an old metal coil it'a probaly an old oil coil. If your running on 12v change the coil to a new one. the old one is probaly breaking down. Know from exp. As for the choking need to richen with the mixture with power needle at the bottom of carb. Should fix that. if not may have to clean and rebuild carb. As for temp. mine runs at about 195 when running all day. Good Luck

This"s one of those thing that can be hard to run down; I"m not familiar with these engines, but often long choking, then backfiring and quick engine heating (10-15 min to 200) could mean fuel restriction, running lean..
First, do the free things: check the rest of your ign: inspect the contacts inside and outside the cap, incl the coil wire connections, and the coil connection; corrosion can reduce spark. Make sure the points are OK, as rr says. If parts available and reasonable, replace points and condenser. If doesn"t help, then consider working on possible fuel restriction.
OOPS: where"s the coil mounted?? Coils going bad will often quit when hot, run when cool..quitting when engine warmed up could be bad coil...
With sympathy...

How about the points? Beyond how they will act if they are burned,if they aren't opening far enough you'll get a lot of those synptoms.
