I have a 1964 Oliver 1800 C series tractor with the row crop wide front axle. I am switching to narrow rows this year and need to narrow up the front axle. I have the pins out of the holes and the u bolts are loose, but the inner tube is stuck. Does anybody have a trick to freeing up that inner tube to move it that doesn"t involve a bunch of heat? Thanks in advance!

Dad has a Super 88 wide front. Ended up hiring a local welder to split the outer tube to get them apart. Welded them back together, ground them down, and can't tell it was ever done.

There ain't no way without LOTS of HEAT!!! Borrow another torch, probably 4 total would be better.Put biggest rosebuds you can find on them. Tie tractor to SOLID object and end of tube to something solid and put a BIG comealong on it and start heating. You are going to have to get the whole thing hot enough to expand to get it out. I'd pull it all the way out, and clean it up good and repaint. Put neverseize on it when reassembling. Go to tractor talk forum and ask Allen in Nebr, he went thru this on a IH about a year ago. Had the front axle off and tied to 2 tractors, took a while but he got it. Chris

Went through this about two years ago with a White 2-85. We banged with a sledge, pulled with a tractor, penetrating fluid soaking, heated. Nothing would work. Took to local machine/welding shop - they heated, froze, and porta power. It Finally came loose. Good Luck.

I'll echo the good luck part. I'm going on seven years now running my 1600 loader tractor with the clamps loose an she hasn't loosened up yet. If I trusted my welding more,I'd consider cutting the spindles off, renotching the tubes and welding them back on.
