The cracks between the liners as stated will not hurt because the head gasket seals against the liners not the block. CHris

I can state without reservation that small cracks at the top of the deck are common and do not hurt anything. The cylinder head and gaskets hold it together and seal it just fine.
If the cracks are at the bottom of the sleeve area, however, the block is junk.
I have an 88 diesel that has been like that for at least 35 years, with no problems, with the Super 88 Pistons and sleeves.

Think about the areas of the crankcase.  When water freezes it expands.  Freezing coolant (water antifreeze mixture) has a lot of push against the sides of the crankcase.  The result is that it forces it apart resulting in cracks between the sleeve bores.  It not only happens in an Oliver engine, it will happen in all makes.  Yep someone didn't watch the freeze level of their coolant.

Were you having any problems with the block before? If not, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's common for those cracks to be there. More common than not.

There is a super 88 / 880 diesel block on ebay right now. He also has a lot of other new/used Oliver parts.
