Considering purchasing a 1948 8N. Anyone have suggestions about what to look out for? Are there reasons I should hold out for a later model, a 1950 or 1951?

8-N's are the best. My dad knows everything there is to know about tractors and he loves those the best. He buys/sells/trades, etc. and also has all kinds of parts and stuff. If you want to talk to someone who knows this stuff, e-mail me with your phone number and I will have him contact you. Thanks

Gary, After 1949 the distributor was moved to the side from the front, making it more convenient to change points, time it, etc. However, I have a 1948 and a 1949 and don't have a problems with them. If the price is right go for it, you can always trade up.

Ok Gary, I have a '48 8N and love it. The only problem you may have is with the steering. This is the second of 3 types of steering units Ford used on the N series. The first using recirculating ball steering. There were problems with keeping in adjustment and right wheel wobble. I just adjusted the the right sector shaft adjustment and no problems since. The later models had adjustment screws in the sector shaft ends and made adjusting easier. Go ahead and buy the tractor. you will not go wrong and if you have problems, there are a lot of us on the forum to help. Enjoy
Tom

I agree that the steering gear is a concern on these tractors. One other common problem is the rear axle nuts being loose and hub spline wearing. Either of these can be an expensive repair. A used hub and axle will run you about $100 to $150 and sector gears are not cheap.

Please help, we are moving and have a 1948 Ford 8N tractor with a 5' ford brush hog of a 1960-70's vintage. Does anyone know what the weight of these items are?
