We have a 1945 2N that seems to need the carburetor rebuilt. Where can I find a kit to do this. Has anyone done this themselves. It seems to leak gas into the oil if the gas isn't shut off everytime the engine stops. And I would prefer not to spend the money to buy a new carburetor. Thanks

Carb rebuild kits can also be purchased at the major ag supply stores, such as TSC and Quality Farm and Fleet/County Post.

The full kit costs about $25 and contains everything you need to make the carb like new in every way. It's worth it if the carb is tired, because you get to replace all the shaft seals and things like that.

If it is the original carb (cast iron MS) you could consider completely stripping the carb, and then having the two main cast iron body parts sand-blasted or chemically stripped. This will remove all the accumulated rust and gunk which may come back to haunt you. Water tends to accumulate in the bottom of the float bowl and cause rust which is well-nigh impossible to remove any other way.

I have found that the float bowl gaskets supplied in new kits are cut a little "full" and if the gasket pooches around a bit when you tighten the screws, it can end up dragging on the float. Make sure, when the carb is all together, that you can shake it and hear the float moving freely.

The full kit contains pretty OK instructions for the rebuild, the I&T manual or original Ford manual contains a little more detail. Turning off the gas when not running is a given - any float valve will weep a little, even a brand new one.

You can purchase all parts needed for the rebuild at your local New Holland dealer. You can purchase an I&T shop manual at many places for about $20 (FO-4). This will help you along with your rebuild. Has easy "see spot run" instructions. It's always a good idea to shut your fuel off when not in use. Gravity works!!
