The folks I bought my "new" 1947 2N from hooked up the 6 volt positive ground battery backwards. It actually started and they moved it to a heated barn. When I got there to take it home it was as dead as a door knob. I know the battery is shorted out, it won't charge. What else did they fry? I suspect the generator and cap & points any body know what else to replace before I try to start it again? HELP PLEASE!!!

It's doubtful that anything but the battery has been damaged.

The starter and ignition system will not be damaged by reverse polarity.

The generator can be "flashed" to put out either polarity by just jumping around the cutout momentarily. This causes the generator to develop a residual magnetic field of the correct polarity for the battery.

As for the battery, it's possible that it has been reversed charged and you might be ablt to bring it back by just leaving a charger on it with the correct polarity. Or it might really be bad (as you suspect).

It is very important that you repolarize the generator field winding.... to teach it to put out negative current... The ammeter needs to be reversed also (If the reading is not reversed now)

Ditto to the previous posts. I hate to admit that I ran my tractor for over a year with the polarity reversed when I first got it. Generator has never really charged properly. I just live with it and put a charge on it every 2-3 weeks. It runs in spite of me.

Maybe nothing , or the voltage reg. I would just get it hooked up right and give it a try. I have seen them charged backwards , and then charged the right way with no ill effects. the points and the cap will not care how they are hooked up , but the voltage reg. might. It will run fine without the gen. working soI would just start it up and see if it charges. If not I would get a regulator from Central tractor and see if that cures your problem. The ford is a very simple tractor and there isn't much to hurt on them. I have one that the only use the gen serves is a belt tensioner cause I installed a 12 volt bat without any mods and it starts and runs with weekend use for about 2 months ( no headlight use ! ) then I recharge it and its good for another 2 months

In my experience, hooking the battery up backwards (positive to wiring, negative to ground)doesn't cause any permanent damage and the tractor will actually run (though a bit rough, 'cause the spark is not "shaped" correctly)with only a slight reduction in power. If your battery is fried, I'd look for other causes than simply a negative ground hookup. My '44 2N was purchased with the battery hooked up backwards, and I ran it that way for a month!
