I am restoring a 2N tractor. It has an 8N engine block with front mount distributor. For a late production 2N, could it have been built with the 8N block, or is the block a replacement? Your knowledge and opinions are requested.

I have a 9N with an 8N engine block so I think it was common to do the 8N swap because of the availability of them. My problem is that I don't know what year my tractor is. In fact I discovered the other day, it looks like I have the axle housings from a 2N. Quite the Mutt, but I like it.

Probably a replacement, this seemed to be common.

I have almost the same problem as the other Jack. I purchased recently what I thought was a 9N. After getting the info here, I checked out the serial nu, On the block is 9N300381. On left side by stater is 247.
On the right rear axle is 882. On left rear axle is 5-14-47 and 2N4015A2 below the last number is 3A.
The emblem on front is FORD. and below it is 2N.
To me it looks like I have a 2N chassis with a 9N motor, Anyone know what I do have? Tks, cpljck

No. The 2n's serial numbers also began with the desination "9n". If it's not an 8n tractor, then you have a 1947 2n, although I think someone on this Board said some 2n's were built in 1948.

8N production began in 1948. We have the one my great grandfater bought new. As my grandfater says it came off the second car of the first rail shipment of 8Ns into St. Louis. He was 14 at that time.

As far as the original question, the 2N should most likely have a 9N numbered engine. The 2N was a stripped down version of the 9N built durring WW2. (under rubber and other supply quotas) Ford probily had a supply of 9N blocks aready cast.

My understanding is that in addition to putting the 9N, 2N, 8N engine in pickups and early Ford Jeeps an industrial version of the engine was also produced. I've seen a "9N" with 2 flanges for fuel pumps, one of which was plated over and the other solid (i.e. without a hole for the fuel pump arm or threaded holes for cap screws)
