Color of a 9N

Hey Guys,

I just bought a 9N(1941 S/N 54XXX). I hear that the color is all grey, but I have seen many restorations of these and they are the red/grey combo like the 8N. Why is that? Did they actually make some 9N's red/grey. Mine is red/grey, but I know it was painted before because the guy I bought it from said the he painted it years ago.

I agree with llamas. The Rust-Oleum Ferguson Gray is the best fit for authenticity. It is green-gray and it's beautiful, and on my newly painted 2N. I believe Henry came up with the red-belly color scheme to help sell more tractors so he could pay the damages to Harry when the suit was settled (years later). And Harry continued with the grey and did quite well with it, if I remember my history correctly.

Chris, I have a 1941 and just had all the Sheet metal painted, don't like the dark grey (my navy
days) so its a N8 grey for everything. I love
the Color (sand grey).
My cost for Sand blasting, repair and paint for
hood, fenders, grill, side panels, and gas tank
was $300.Canadian or $220.00 US. The result will
give me another 50+ years and if someone wants
to make it "Factory State" they can repaint

9Ns and 2Ns were originally all grey. The 8N was the first redbelly. No 9s or 2s came off the assembly line with any red. I'd also be willing to bet most any N you see that has decent paint has been painted sometime in the last 50 years.

Why paint a 9 or 2 like an 8? Just my opinion, but the all dark grey scheme is a bit drab. Plus painting an early model like a later model might give the owner of sense of currency.

The father of a co-worker worked in a Ford dealership when the 8N came out. He claims that a unscrupulous dealers would repaint 9N and 2N tractors in the 8N color scheme and then just let farmers *think* they were newer that they were.

He said the same thing happened again the next time the paint scheme changed (blue and gray?).

Chuckle, painting a 50 year old tractor red and grey to create an illusion of making it current? I just don't think so. One would have to go with at least Blue for that (which looks good imo). Or even a nice "current" shade of Kubota orange!

Good point. Maybe the "sense of currency" is more the "scent of money." Most of the 9/2N's were painted with the 8N colors so that folks might think that the tractor was one of the newer models. After all, the red and gray is a lot spiffier than the plain gray. Not that anyone would intentionally deceive another....

Over at my favorite N-repair guy's place, is an 8N. It's painted Ford 60's blue and has "Ford 4000 diesel" decals on the hood.

Some poor sap bought it - as a 4000. He brought it in to have the live PTO fixed, also the hydraulics didn't seem to be working right. The conflict between the "diesel" on the decal and the fact that he was putting gasoline in the tank had not yet, apparently, sunk in.

Just to add that the "original" all-over grey of the 9N/2N is considerably darker than the grey used on 8Ns and later Fords. It's more of a grey-green color. The story is that Ford used the original darker grey because it was the same paint bought in bulk for painting machines and work areas at the Rouge. The switch to the lighter grey, it is said, was because the darker grey showed up dust and bird poop so bad.

When it comes time to paint, Petersen and Beemer's "Originality Guide" contains various exact paint codes to match the original color, or post here for other tried-and-true recipes. There is a Rust-Oleum color called Ferguson Grey which is rumored to be a dead ringer for the original 9N/2N grey.
