I have almosted completed a 12 volt conversion on my 8N, but some of my wiring is a little off. I am wired for negative ground and have only one wire connected to my alternator (bat terminal). Most of the diagrams I have seen show the P1 and P2 terminals being used. Right now my N runs fine, but will not shut off when I flip the on/off switch. Does anybody have a wiring diagram that only uses the bat terminal on the alternator for a 12 volt conversion. I really need to get my wires straighted out.
Thanks in advance,
Doug

Here is another diagram. I used this with good results. Neil shows it with a light instead of a diode. The diode works, so does a 10 Watt 10 Ohm wirewound resistor. I'm using the resistor and it works fine.

The #1 terminal is connected to the ignition switch.A one amp/50volt diode should be installed in the #1 circuit. It will only let current flow in one direction. This will let the tractor shutdown when the switch is turned off.Without the diode the alt. will back feed current to the coil.

The #2 terminal is hooked to the Batt terminal on the Back of the Alt.

THE FIELD EXCITATION IS ABOUT 3 TO 4 AMPS, SO IF YOU JUST HAVE THE DIODE IN THE CKT YOU SHOULD HAVE A HIGHER CURRENT DIODE. THE 10 OHM RESISTOR OR LIGHT IS PROBABLY A BETTER ALTERNATIVE.

Doug, Make sure your 1 Wire (alt) Connection is on the BAT side of the Ignition Switch.

Hope this helps

This one sounds right to me. If you've only got one wire on the alternator and it charges OK but the tractor won't shutoff, the only possible problems I can imagine are:

1) a bad ignition switch

2) the alternator is wired to the coil side of the switch instead of the battery side (just as Doug(OH) said).

HERE IS A PIC, SOUNDS LIKE YOU SHOULD CHECK HOW YOU HAVE YOUR IGITION WIRED.

Your link did not work. If you leave off the "?popup=1" it will work.

Doug..... .The typical Delco SI-10 alternator used for 12 volt conversion comes in 2 configurations, a 3-wire scheme and with different guts, it becomes a 1-wire alternator. You just can't hook up a 3-wire like it was a 1-wire. Thats the bad news.

The good news is the 3-wire scheme is a better way to go because the 1-wire doesn't want to charge at the N-Tractors low operating RPM's. I know, 1-wire seems so simple, but..... .

There a couple of links out there that have real good info and diagrams for 3-wire. John Smiths is one of the best that I remember right off hand.

Hope this convinces you ..... ..Dell
