Due to being attached to a manure spreader that gets dumped into daily and emptied about once a week the 9N sits outside. As you might expect it gets water in the tranny/hydraulics when I forget to cover it up (most of the time, I know, I'm stupid, but let's move on). I suspect most comes in around the shifter (right?). The shifter boot is tight at the bottom but loose at the top around the shifter. Should it be loose or fairly tight? Easy to replace? Worth doing? Where else does water get into the system? Any cure?

Thanks for any input!

The starter button appears to be a possibility. Some previous owner of my 8N had tried to remove the starter button but botched it. I removed a big wad of tape and wire to try to replace it and noticed gear oil around it. Button spins around freely now but won't come out. Supose if oil can leak out water can seep in. Going to try agin this weekend. Will probably be posting for help Monday.

Four places for water to get into the transmission

1. At rear of top cap where control spring yoke goes through the casting is an ungasketed, non-sealable hole that will let some rain in. If hit with a hose, it will let a lot of water in.

2. Seat bolt holes are drilled/tapped through (?) the top cap. RTV on threads will help. My 2N has studs with washers/nuts.

3. Shift lever. Keep a boot on this one. The casting makes a nice funnel. Ford/NH ptno C5NN-7277-C is the boot. Coat the inside with vasalene/silicone grease, after getting it over the shift lever knob, turn it inside out and roll it onto the transmission. Mine lasted 18 months in the desert. I'm looking for a better one. A rack/pinion bellows type seal?

4. Transmission filler cap. Ford/NH ptno 8N-7011 gasket fits the transmission filler cap & drain plug as well as the drain plug on the hydraulic plate. Better than RTV. Coat them with chassis grease so they won't stick.

My shifter boot is good and tight and the tractor hasn't been out in the weather much, but I recently drained the gear oil and found about a quart of water in there.

The gear oil filler cap on this tractor doesn't fit very tight, and I think a blowing rain will get under it. The tractor is now kept in the barn, but I'm going to seal under that cap with silicon anyway.

Rather than try to stretch the new boot over the housing, roll it back over it self and then un-roll it down over the housing. A beer and frequent brakes help too....

I ordered some from ITK auto parts and I presume New Holland has them. NOt expensive and easy to replace, makes a big difference in how much water runs into tranny. Mine fit pretty tightly. I would sure recommend replacing them.

I use a silicon putty used for air conditioning sealing around my boot. It works fine.
