After tremendous soul searching and looking at dozens of eligible 8N's, I finally took the plunge. Now, as my checking account is dripping with red (Dearborn Red) ink and my wife is giving me that " you really did it this time" look, I am coming to you, my brether-N for support and reassurance that I did not get burned-Here goes: 1952 8N, same owner for 40 years who purchased from original owner. To his knowledge the engine has never been apart and the bolt heads back this up. Does not appear to have ever been split either. front pivot and bushings all tight, radius arms straight, 39lb oil warm at throttle, 20 lb warm at idle, no smoke, no oil in water and vice-versa, engine oil dirty but no sludge, mild throwout bearing noise but clutch is smooth with good travel and free play. Tranny quiet in all gears. Crank pully wobbles but holds belt. Radiator a bit chewed up but not leaking, coolant older but clean. Hydraulic a bit slow, will hold 2 bottom plow off the ground, but sinks down in 10 minutes. Hydraulic fluid clean. Hydraulic rattles some when picking up plow. Good charge on ammeter, starts quick from cold ( plugs and wires look ancient). Good front bumper, headlamps, tool box, battery box with patent plate (painted over) Fuel tank still pretty shiny, fuel and tank innards clean. Tin all good, no rust, some small dents with poor bondo repair, very old brush paint job. Swinging draw bar, new rear tires( no calcium), front tires are junk.Broken/bent leveling box poorly welded. No significant leaks anywhere. No proof meter, but 80% "nubs" on clutch & 90% brake pedal, which look to be original. Barn kept and used to pull wagons and back blade by prior owner.
It's all there, it's sweet, and I'm sure you can relate when I tell you this tractor spoke to me.
So, when I risked my marriage by plunking down $3000 for this machine, did I do wrong? is this too much? what did I fail to consider when evaluating? I'm looking for support ( or a brow beating) on this decision and some marital advice to boot. I will be using said 8N to pull a finish mower for a year or so till the reserves are back up, my wedlock is again harmonious, and I can pull off a restoration so the N can take it's rightful place along my beloved 640 and the saga can begin anew. Sorry so long, I'm a tormented soul at this moment. P.S. - Tractor values board on this site not at all helpful, prices too low, will only further infuriate the Mrs!

I can only reply as a wife of a 8n lover as you have figured out l am not Mark.
anyway Mark bought a ugly rusty delapadated ford 8n l thought he was surly going to sell it for junk but as time went by and he bought part after part then paint and 5800 dollars later it looks like a new tractor now l am wondering who he spends more time with the 8n or me so when you are married to a 8n lover you have to
ask which part you buying this week?? I have let this little tractor kind-a get to me.I seem to take more pictures of it than he does. This Sat.
we went to the tractor equipment and supply and i found myself showing some pictures of the tractor
guy (who over the past year has managed to get most of our spare money) His reply was Now that you have that one restored Do you want to buy another one? Good thing he was behind the counter.
Wife of an 8n Fanatic.

That's a pretty good deal. Just remember, the money is not spent, it has changed form only. Like any good tool, it will hold it's value just like money in the bank, so what's the the problem?

I'm sure you did fine.

My only beef with the fords is that any price is too much if it doesn't have a Sherman Hi/LO. It makes 'em alot more useful around the house/farm.

If you've got money to burn on something useful, get a Sherman for it.

:-)

Yeah,but...

A Sherman would definitely increase the potential flexibility of the N, but it depends on your needs. I predominantly plow snow and do finish mowing, and frankly don't have any need for gearing beyond what I have. I'd take more gears if you gave them to me, and I have no idea why the 8N was designed to achieve freeway speeds in reverse, but I don't feel I lose any utility with the gearing I have.

You AND mom read this and then decide if you did right. Yes, you got a good restorable tractor at a fair price. When my wife and I married 13 years ago (not the first for either of us) I whined and pined for a Ford Tractor even though we lived in a townhouse! On our second Christmas Morn I had to go out to the car and there in the driveway was a brand new 8N. Now the unfortunate part: (note I said "Brand New." It was a TOY MODEL REPLICA! How unfortunate! But the more I thought, the more I felt fortunate. For this told me she either shared my interest and desires for an "N", or she was doing a damn good job of pampering me. A couple of years later we had our five acres in the country and our "dream" house. One day I stopped at a yard sale and next door, in the back, behind a shed was the ugliest, rustiest, most darling 8N you've ever seen. I asked the owner if he would sell it. He responded never; he was saving it for his grandson. He did say he would consider $2800, not a penny less. I'm sure he felt such a high price would end my interest. I asked if he had any implements with it. He said bush hog, turning plow, scrape blade, boom pole, dirt scoop, draw bar, disc harrow and pulley converter, all for the huge price of $2800. The tractor had been sitting in the rain, cold and weather, he said, for more than a month without cranking. It fired right up and of course sang the greatest love song to me. Long story short, I called mama and simply told her I loved her. Nothing else. I gave him a $l000 down payment and promised $500 a month over the next 3 l/2 months. I did and he did. When I hauled it home, mama just shook her head but I caught the hint of a smile as she turned back to the biscuits. I am now looking for my first hit and miss fly wheel engine. She asked me what I planned to do with it. I replied, "listen to it."

You did ok. Where could you find a Kubota or Kiota for that price that wasn't junk? I paid $400 for my old 49 N. Pulled it home behind a pick up truck. I have close to $2500 in it now with new engine, brakes, steering, paint etc. A fuel injector on a late model Kubota or other tractor costs about $1000. Usually that is why they are for sale. My N will smoke the tires now and I can easily get my money back. When you work on it or repair it do it right. You will be happier in the long run.

Mark,

I bought my 50 in like condition (except paint is new & tractor is 12volt) without any extras for just over $3000 about six weeks ago. Seriously considered about six or seven before my wife picked out this one while I was looking at a '52. They were all in the same price range with some being in real "rough" condition. I don't think you did bad at all. Congrats and good luck.

Rick

Well, since you seem to have wanted an N, and you got one that thrills you at a price you can survive, I think you did just fine.

Mark, I think you did fine on the price, given the condition, etc. Three things for the wife: (1) tell her it's an investment, and will appreciate in price; (2) use it to do a project that she wants done around the place; (3) teach her to drive it.....you may have to look for another one after that (grin).

Good luck with it..... ..Ed

Mark,

Ed is on the right track about getting the wife interested in the tractor. If you could have seen the expression on my wife's face when we wenched on the trailer our 41N that I bought from her uncle? It's ironic now that I've passed the wife test drive. She gills her arena for her horses better than I do! Enjoy the investment, it does pay off.

$2500-$3500 here in N. Cal. for 8Ns, depending on shape. Welcome to the Board. It's always good to get new N-owners!

New Harleys are as much as 17-18,000. Fancy bass boats are 20-30,000, and an old Ford tractor will keep you much closer to the house when the sun goes down. Enjoy. Mike-Iowa

Mark from your description you have about a "good as they come" original 8N. If you get around to stripping the paint for new I'm sure when done you will want to sing praises to the guy that put it on heavy with a brush, the bright shiny metal underneath is nice to behold. I know, my best tractor came with a paint job surely done with a mop out of a 5 gallon bucket! Welcome and keep on NN.

In my neck of the woods (New Mexico) that price for an 8N was a steal. Beat up ones that look terrible go for that price around here.

When i told my wife i was looking for one she was all for it, she wrote the check for my 8N.
That price is in line, I paid less for mine a few weeks ago W/O any equipment, bad tires, hydraulic problems and a bad primer paint job & home made draw bar, still I am happy and it is working right along side my new equipment.
Enjoy it, they never get cheaper $$.
