12v conversion question

I have a front mount distributor 8n.I am considering doing a 12 volt conversion on it. I have tried to do my homework on this project by reading all the help that is on this site. I understand that the wires going to the coil need to be reversed for the negative ground conversion, but when I look at the distributor I see only one wire going to it. This is at the top of the coil. Is there another wire inside the coil box that I am missing? What is the easiest way to changed the wires over? Would it make sense to just cut somewhere in the middle of each and then connect to the opposite wire with a solder joint and shrink tubing? This is a great site for me since I just bought my 8N and am learning something new everyday from your forum. Keep up the great work.

I purchased a Tisco coversion kit (mine is a 1940 9N) which included even the alternator mounting hardware. Cost $245,I think. Also comes with new 12v coil and new wire harness with schematic. I follwed the instructions and it works great. You can do it cheaper with used parts though. I have a 3 brush generator & regulator with new brushes for sale or trade.

You have noticed a good point about 12 conversions and front mounted coils. There is about a 15% degradation on spark current if you reverse the polarity of the coil. If the system is in good shape, it will probably not be noticed. Jim has solved his problem by increasing the voltage at the coil by playing with resistances. If I were to change to 12 volts (Not going to, have no reason to do so) I would change to a 12 volt front mounted coil. (They are available) Reversed polarity alone will not prevent your tractor from running ok... But it is the old story of the straw that broke the camels back. If your plugs are fouled, points old and decrepid, carb not adjusted correctly, wires weak, distributor cap old, ignition switch with high resistance ...etc..
You get the point...

Claus,
I agree with both you and Jim, in that adding resistance (for the DC world) does not play well in inductive coupling. The choice of a 12V Coil for the Front Mount is wise.

You state that just reversing the current direction will result in "15% degradation on spark current". Hmm! please educate me on this phenomena.

Phil,

Phil
What is it that you may have a problem with? That there is degradation of spark energy (if the coil primary is reversed) or quantifying the amount of degradation? Claus

The easiest way is to not worry about it. There is no easy way to swap the polarity of the coil on a front-mount N tractor.

My 2N has been converted to 12v and I've not had any trouble with it once I got the coil voltage adjusted to the right level (mine runs at 4.5 volts). It took a few trys with different resistor values. Before that, the coil voltage was a little low (2.25 volts) and I had trouble starting the tractor when it was cold.

I now have a 12v coil on order (cost $35.00) so that I can do away with some of the extra wiring and resistors.

OK will do, and I dont think it was welded
Thanks
