I know now why my '47 2N wouldnt start.
Compression is the missing element.
It tested 0, 2, 10, 15# dry.
Number 4 still tested 0-2 with oil. I didnt try the others wet. Is there anything else I should do before I tear it down? Could this be a valve problem or do you think its rings or more?
Anything to check, measure or photograph? I plan to start this week. Your advise has been very helpful in the past. In fact, I print most of it to put in my 3 ring binder to supplement the service manual.

I agree that valves stuck open on all cylinders is odd. One possibility is the timing gear. You should be able to pull the governor and crank the engine and tell if the timing gear and cam are turning. Also inspect gear for any missing teeth. Hope this helps.

I'd finish the wet test on the other cylinders. So far it sounds like stuck valves. Finish the test to make sure that's all it is. Then open the valve covers and take a look. You should be able to see or measure a stuck valve or two or ?... It sounds a little odd that there'd be a stuck valve in every cylinder, but stranger things have happened. A little Marvel Mystery oil is also a good remedy for stuck valves.

Tom, I had a similar problem a while back with my '49 8N,'Wheezer'. It suddenly began starting only with great difficulty with absolutely no power when it would (rarely) start at all. Finally it wouldn't start for love or money and showed very low compression. Suspecting either carbon under valves or sticking valves (compression just doesn't go away overnight) I tried Seafoam carbon cleaner, putting it through the spark plug holes over toward the valves but also, I'm sure, getting it into the cylinders as well. I let it set for a while, put in new Motorcraft plugs and tried starting. MASSIVE amount of smoke and timely startup. Wheezer has run OK since then. Don't know if you have the same problem, but it's a cheap experiment. Good luck.

Regards,
Darryl Freese 8N 210077 (Wheezer)
