I went to help a new found tractor friend bring home his 2N tractor form his recreation property and was suprised to find he has a auxilary transmission on his tractor. He has a Sherman as I understand it to be attached at the front of his belhousing left hand side, and as we loaded it on the trailer I noticed at the back, where you would normally check the hydraulic oil,on the right hand side another lever. As I looked more carefully, as it was partially blocked by the brake pawl, I think it read Howard gear reduction. Is this possible or has he something else? He has had this tractor for some 20 years but is about to restore it to orginal condition. Also the PTO shaft is diffent than I have ever seen before, it is a bigger circumference and does not have a standard spline.
He does not seem to anything about what I have described but knows he has a Sherman transmission. He claims before he bought it the previous owner used it to rototill. Has anyone everseen any tractor like this? I,m very curious , it does not seem to matter to him. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Stan

If you lurk around this site some more, you will find information about the Howard Rotovator. It was a combination of gears and a rear mounted tiller. The gears let the tractor run at a higher engine speed with lower ground speed to allow the tiller to operate at a proper speed to prepare the soil. Without it, the tractor runs slow which makes the pto run slow and the tiller ineffectual. I would suggest he look into the n-newsletter site and they might have a booklet on it. It is a nice addition to any old tractor.
