If you have a 2N/9N; standing at the radiator facing the N, #1 will be the 1st spark plug and will be the upper left plug on the front mount distributor; firing order being 1-2-4-3. Problem is 9Ns ceased existance in 1942, 2Ns in 1947 when 8Ns came into being. So what's that serial number Joe?

Regarding Joe's '49 9N...If his is anything like mine, he could very easily have a 9N Serial Number on the engine due to a possible swapped engine on a rebuild.

In the '80s my '48 8N engine was swapped in that very situation as follows: The tractor is an 8N with the date 3-17-48 stamped on the rear axle castings. The serial number on the '48 8N's engine is 9N282416 indicating that it's from the very last batch of 2N's made in '47. Thus, it's a '48 8N with the engine from a 2N and the serial number starts with a 9n..... The horsepower increase on the 8N engine was all due to the higher compression ration (6.5 to 1). Every other component in the engines is identical. All replacement pistons for the N's were the 6.5 ratio and since my 2N engine has been rebuilt at least once in the last 50 years, I now have every thing the same as the 8N engine. On top of that, when we got her in 1977, all her castings were painted blue.

Sounds like your N and Joe's N are having a serious identity crisis. Mix and match engines and the wrong color to boot! I saw one similar last week at a florist shop in Dallas; 2N drivetrain with an 8N engine, painted red. I still would like to know the serial # on Joe's-might tell us more.
