Is there anywhere that I can get a new or like new distributor shaft for my 1946 2N? I just did a full tune up and noticed a lot of wear on the end that fits in the camshaft. This wear makes it impossible to get the right timing because the slot in the housing that the screw goes though that is used for setting the timing isn't long enough. I lengthened the slot by grinding and filing about .080 from the housing but only barely got the timing close to perfect. I should replace the shaft. The rest of the distributor is in really good shape.
Any advice would be welcomed.

Palmer Fossum sells rebuilt (timed) complete dist. I don't know his Phone # but if you check the archives you'll find it. And he's a real nice guy to talk to also. Good luck. David

One added note to Clauses' response. Once you replace the shaft and bushings, she will be really tight to get into place. You will have to be ultra careful to make certain you put the bolts through the original holes or else you may never get your timing right again. It will be hard to tighten the distributor down enough to keep it from walking as time and use vibrate it. I think Walt's carries the base also. Replacing it may save you some headaches that I experienced because the previous owner of my 46 2N did the same thing you did. The process bought him enough time to sell it to a sucker, me, who got stuck having to replace the entire distibutor and coil.

Best to ya!

Regarding tight bushings, it's perfectly acceptable to spin the distributor over to "settle" these before assembly. A couple of minutes with your drill motor and a generous portion of light oil will work wonders. You can spin it with a round wire brush on the drive tang end. Flush out the light oil, reassemble, oil sparingly with something a little heavier and you should be in good shape.

I rebuilt mine, and had no problems whatsoever outside of working the shaft in the new bushings so it would turn smoothly. A new housing costs $55.00 and I see no reason to buy a new one unless an Elephant stepped on it...(grin) New distributors are also extremely high... I would stick with rebuilding my own again had I the need.
Happy Motoring

Yes, I don't see any reason to buy a new housing. The .080 lengthening of the slot I did gained me probably 2 deg. No damage done. Just enough to get TDC. Thanks for everyones advice. I'll replace the shaft and bushings.
