I have 2 2N's. Both of them have the same problem but it doesn't seem to hurt thetractor and I'm getting the full range of RPM's. I figure if it works I'm not inclined to mess with it.

This is not a difficult problem to diagnose. Maybe the thought of a govenor scares some people. With the throttle lever at the low side of the quadrant, stand on the right side of the tractor and look at the linkage and the throttle plate connection. This is rod from the govenor to the carb. Does the throttle plate move smoothly when you go through the lower end of the quadrant? If not you have a linkage and or spring problem. The arm on the govenor where the throttle control rod is attached moves the carburetor arm through a spring. Both arms should move when you go through the quadrant. There should be no spring preload or slop in the mechanism. Let us know how you make out. It is best to follow paragraph 57 in the IT manual for the complete adjustment. Good Luck

Whenever I think of our Governor, Jim Hunt(NC), it's a scary thought...

Hey, you could be from Minnesota. Then you'd really have a governor to be afraid of!! Shoot, I wouldn't mess with him, and I don't even live there!

Maybe there is a problem with the Govenor Balls. Could have flat spots on them... He he...

My 8n is the same way. I just live with it, as I still get the full range of RPM...

Could be your govenor. disconnect the govenor link at the carb and see if idles down. check your linkage for any anomalies. The ford shop manual has govenor rigging instructions.
