I was mowing the other day when she starting to miss like she was running low on fuel (I was mowing on a slight hill). So I brought her in to refill the tank. When I removed the gas cap there was a lot of preasure in there. I have had this old 2N for close to 15 years and have never noticed this before. The tank was low but I don't think it was low enough to sputter like she was. Could it have been missing because of the preasure? What should the gas cap releaf be?

I have 2-2n's that give me the same problem. One
has a Wagner Loader and it is a pain every where
to pull the tank. Cured it by drilling a 1/16th
hole in the gas cap. If I ever fill the tank to
the top I just plug the hole temp. with a piece of
round toothpick.

Now that's an easy "fix"! Thanks

There are two holes in the gasoline tank venting path. One can be seen in the dome. The other is in the tank skin under the dome. The dome is to catch liquid and return it to the tank while still venting to the atmosphere.
The hole in the dome can be opened with a drill or whatever. The hole in the tank might be opened with air pressure through the hole in the dome - with the gas cap OFF. Fumbling around with a wire to find a second 1/8" hole through another 1/8" hole might be worth a couple more beers.
Do NOT use a vented gas cap. Gasoline dripping around the battery and starter switch are not a good thing. An uphill position with a full tank will cause a fire hazard.
The Ford Operators Manual, ptno N42000830, fig 49, page 82 has a good detailed photo of the tank vents.
Hope this keeps you gassed.

Just fixed the exact problem on my 8n this past weekend. Remove the hood then the gas tank. At the dome on the top of the tank you will notice a little pooched up spot. A small wire or paperclip should clean it right out.

I left a little gas in my tank then put the lid on and turned the tank over while I had it off the tractor. I let the gas run out of the vent hole for a few seconds to get it nice and clean.

Good luck. It's about an hour job.

I think there is a vent under the hood that is not accessable except by removing the tank from the hood. It could have a bugs home in it. If you were from here in Al I'd say you probably have a dirt dauber raising kids in there.

Probably not bugs up here. Rust is more likely the problem. he he

It is unlikely, that you could build up enough pressure in your tank to overcome the Float assembly in the carb. There is no pressure relief in the gas cap. There is however, a dome on top of the gas tank with a pin hole in it to relieve tank pressure. This hole may be clogged with whatever. The only way to get at it that I know is to remove the tank. About a 2 beer job with help.

Thanks Claus. I'll look at it. Two beers could be just the motivation needed!
