This is kind of a wierd problem I did not see any where before. I think I know what the problem is but I am asking the...Experts first.

When I start my tractor after about a week of sitting, it starts fine. Then after about a minute it starts smoke white smoke badly for about another minute then is clear as a bell after that. It I start it the next day no smoke.... The smoke as the smell of anti-freeze in it and it reminds me of steam.

Got any clues?

I would guess that you have a seeping head gasket
or a warped head causing seapage. You didn't say how long or time of year this happended (just after long winter freeze? ). Useally with a cracked head or block the crack will open up more when heated so I think I would look else where for the leak. Ckeck the plugs or turn engine over with plugs removed. you may find the fouled cylinder. Good Luck !

NOW you scareing me!! I thought I might have just a bad head gasket. I sure hope the block is not cracked!? I runs fine after the minute of mist/smoke stops the tractor has power and the fluids remain clean. If there was a crack in the cylnder wall I would expect more signs in the breather cap, or radiator. Something else should show up. I just didn't know if this was a common sign to a gasket failure or not.

The motor could be running very lean. Check your carburator adjustment. You could try opening the main needle about 1/2 turn.

I almost forgot, it could be just moisture that collected in the motor from sitting for a week.

Well, you are obviously getting coolant into the combustion chamber. Now the question is, how the heck is it getting in there? Start with the easy stuff (Relatively) Loose head bolt(s) , Blown head gasket. First take a compression test. Possible causes, head gasket, cracked head, defective water jacket in block (Ouch) You may have to take compression test when hot and cold.
Hope it is not the block.
Good Luck

I have not looked in the manual yet but the water goes over the head on a flat head?

Oil is clean. I just changed it, but the old oil showed no signed of anti-freeze containation. I know what that looks like my wife owner a 82' Escort and we all know what a nightmare those were. I have not pulled the plugs to see if they show any signs. Like I said I have a guess but I prefer not to lead anyone on at this point. I might be all wrong also. The anti-freeze is clean also, no foam on cap or spot floating in fluid. I check that before I started it last. Any more guesses?

hi there... the fellow that said you have a contamination problem is right... no doubt the head. I just tore mine off for the same problem as you discribe... It is so minor and no doubt eithe a warped head which you can have milled or gasket. If it has started to lead you will probably have to replace eeven if it was caussed by a loose bolt
