Kurt, I had the same problem with my 8n. It would start and run fine if I pulled it, but it would not start or even fire with the battery.I thought it could be the starter. The problem was dirty battery connections. The battery turned the engine over good but it would not fire. I always thought if the battery would turn the engine over you would have good spark. I always find something knew about the n's.

Kurt, make sure your condenser is good, I would also pull the distributer off and set the points and the timing. Also make sure the fine copper lead from the condenser connection to the point set is good. Mine was broke and it took me forever to find it. After I did it starts before it turns over twice, even at 10 degrees below zero. Good luck Mark B

Also, check your starter if all else fails. Tired starters not only crank the engine slower, but also draw excessive current. This drops the voltage available to the ignition system, which can result in a weak or no spark.

Does the tractor start instantly if you pull start it by towing? If so, it could be a weak starter.
