I've replaced the piston cup seals in my cylinders a couple of times. I decided it was time to take them in and have them honed/repaired. The cylinders are wore so bad they need to be replaced. I had no ideal the cost involved. I got two estimates from reputable shops and they were between 200 and 250 bucks a piece to replace the barrels and refurbish them. This seemed excessive. I checked out Northern Equipment, and new ones, with shipping, are about the same. Who would pay that much? Am I missing somehing? No wonder these loaders end up in the bushes. I'm still trying to decide what to do with it. Any suggestions?

Northern Equipment sells some generic cylinders and some name brand ones (Prince). The prices are only slightly higher for the name brand cylinders. I am currently building a loader for my tractor and I bought the Prince cylinders.

My reccomendation would be to buy the new name brand cylinders.

Be careful if you buy the new cylinders. Some of them are not high quality. Is the shaft chrome or nickle plated? Quality of steel and finish of the bore, quality of the seals? I would go for a quality rebuild over new unless the new were made by a top manufacturer. Try just rebuilding the worst one and then when you get more money have the other done. Quality is expensive but when you buy low quality it can be even more expensive. Regards, EEA (PA)

Run a thicker oil and live with the leaks. And I'm not particularly tongue in cheek'n you. I live with engine leaks for the same reason. Costs me a whole lot more in time (or labor if I pay someone instead) then it does in lost oil.

Who would pay that much? Anyone that needs them. Because that's what they cost. Doesn't have anything to do with the design of the loader, or its age - that's what hydraulic cylinders cost. If this seems excessive to you, perhpas you might try making a piece of graded steel tube 3 feet long with a honed bore that's within .005" TIR. It ain't easy.

This would be a good time to consider a filter in your hydraulic system if you don't already have one.

llater,
