I use a hydraulic press and bolster. I'd be leery of using a puller, as having the risk of chipping a tooth, but it does apparently work. Mark the shaft before you remove it to make sure you press the gear back to the same place.

I like to add a couple of small tack welds between shaft and pulley when I put it back - the press-fit will never be as good the second, or third, or fourth time, and you don't want the gear coming loose.

llater,

I got mine off with a sturdy two legged puller, it would be easier with a three legged puller. The puller shaft is 1\2" dia. I believe. It took about all it had to get the gear off.

The driven gear and shaft come out as an assembly. If you need to remove the gear it has to be pressed of with an arbor press or other such means.
