Lost my key. What is the best way to start it up without it?

All the ignition switches were keyed alike. Henry must not have been afraid of tractor theft. I'm sure the New Holland dealer has a replacement key, and I have seen them in aftermarket catalogs too. I bet the aftermarket complete switches don't use the same key, though.

I lost my key once. Remove the switch and take it to a lock smith and have new keys made. Not difficult or expensive. You CAN jumper it, but at least a key keeps honest people from using your tractor, possibly permanently.

I forgot the most important part. Within 15 minutes of replacing the switch after having new keys made, you will probably find the "lost" key. I did. With this in mind, you might want to only have one key made. That should be sufficient to attract the old key. Have fun!

The proper Ford replacement is:

PtNo N9840259
Description Lock Wire (really the ignition switch)
Price $9.44 (Schaefer Eq. Co., 03/21/98)

Large (1"?) open end wrench or channel lock pliers will install it after removing the battery.

Both pigtailed wires go to the terminal block (bottom and right terminals) with the ignition ballast resistor on it. While you are there clean the the connections on the third terminal also. Click on the optional link below to find a wiring diagram.

Tried to find my old lock to try the one-key-fits-all story, but must have trashed it. The new key is double sided, five pins per side, which would indicate ten a ten cylinder lock like Ford autos/trucks have. Why bother when you can open the battery cover and jumper it with a three inch piece of bailing wire - after scraping off the rust.

The key switch is only a 1 tumbler lock. I just took mine out to remove all the paint that was crudded up inside. Use a small screw driver.

On the back of the switch should be two wires soldered onto two terminal connections. When you turn the key, the two terminals are shorted together. Simply jumper the two terminals, to turn the ignition on, without the key. Don't forget to remove the jumper when your done.

When I installed a new 9n ignition switch my New Holland Dealer told me if I ever lost my new key to come back in and he would give me another key, he said the 9n's were all keyed alike and he had a big box of them in back! don't know if he was pulling my leg or not!, but what does a phone call cost to New Holland!

All you have to do is purchase a 2 pole key ignition switch and hook it up. There are only two wires and the switch is not expensive.
