ok, if i dont get it fixed this weekend, im pushing it in the ditch, covering it over and getting a john deere, drastic i know, but ive had it.

No power under load, here are the facts.

New Valve job with new components to repair burnt exhaust valve.

valves are set ok and quiet

compression 100 psi on all cylinders

spark to all plugs, new plugs and wires

governor is working, the carb is full open under load

running 12V conversion with 12v coil, still using ballast, but always have with no problem

fuel runs out of fuel line with no restriction

starts great

idles great

runs smooth

revs great

but with the finish mower on, or even running in 4th gear, its got NO power at all

im almost convinced its fuel, im gonna do another rebuild on the carb, i put in a cheap kit i got from stevens and the main float valve leaked and flooded the carb, so i put the old seat and valve back in.

i'll replace the points and condenser just because

but with all the rain here in houston this summer i have to get mowing or else.

thanks

I think it is the timing also, either it is not set correctly or is stuck. I can't imagine trying to determine the real timing at speed without a timing light as on the front mounts! Some dragsters set the timing to the final advance to start with which means the low rpm power is nill but when the engine gets the revs up the timing is now correct and look out, max power developed here. The gas air mixture must have time to burn and start expanding before it can apply push on the piston, and it helps for this to have a small head start (advance timing) for the peak power to occur as the piston just starts down on the power stoke. Take some time off and do something else, that is when my best ideas finally come to me on solving a nagging problem. Good luck.

I had a similar problem and although It SEEMED to me that I had plenty of fuel flow.. it just was not enough. I put a new bowl assembly in and the problem cleared up. My only clue was that it seemed to run a little better on a full tank than when it got down below 1/2 or so. It just turned out to be crud plugging the main feed. My coil was also causing a bit of the problem too.. after replacing both components it works great. Good luck

Could the governor cause this?

The governor could be causing it, but more likely it's in the timing advance. I'd set the timing a little bit ahead and see if that gives it more power. I'd check the governor function and adjustment, too.

Had another thought. Maybe your muffler is plugged up?

Have you checked the air cleaner to see if it is plugged or not allowing enough air flow? Try test running the tractor with the air cleaner tube off. Be careful not to suck debris into the carb, and don't leave it off.

Based on your previous post it sounds like you have a front mount 8N converted to 12V. While your changing the points and condensor check the timing and the centrifigal advance mechanism in the distributor. It almost sounds like a timing problem, like too much advance. You could also check the condition and color of the plugs. You may be burning too lean. Speaking of which, what plug are you using?

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but just for kicks and grins I've played with the timing adjustment on the distributor of my 2N. (I learn better by doing) It makes one heck of a difference in the performance of the machine when under load. May not help in this case, but it's worth a try. The logic makes sense to me anyway.

It would help if you had a buddy close by to swap parts with. I recently met an older gentleman (older than me anyway) who has rebuilt a few Ns in his day, and still had a couple around for everyday use. He has been kind enough to help me by loaning me (known good) parts. In return we get to sit around shootin' the bull and sippin' whiskey.

My point? Kick back, have a sip or two and give it a little thought. Eventually you WILL get it. This ain't rocket science.

Later..... Tommy(MO)
