It's almost Mowing season now, and I have yet to buy a finish mower for my 8n. Just wondering if we could take a poll and see what mower (brand and model) everyone would recommend. I've looked at King Kutter, Woods, New Holland, Farm King, Land Pride, I think that's about all that's available around here. Let's see what everyone uses here on the board and any opinions about their mowers, good and bad. Right now, I'm leaning toward King Kutter, but only because of my budget. I like the New Holland mower, but it is pricey along with the Woods mowers also. Haven't had an opportunity to price the Farm King, but it looks to be very well built. What y'all got out there??

Has anyone out there had any experience with Rhino? I think they make a pretty good mower just looking at them on the dealer's lot, price isn't too bad either. Brian

PS>>Thanks for all the replies so far!!

I picked up a used Land Pride that does a great job and seems perfectly matched to my 2N. it's a side discharge 5 ft model. It disperses the clippings very well even in relatively high grass. The only problem I have is how do you all clean the clippings off the underside. First time I put it on jackstands and lay underneath it. too time consuming and messy. 2nd time I picked one side up and leaned it against the rear tractor wheel. Bad idea, my chiropractor told me I shouldn't be picking up one side of a 450 lb. mower unless I wanted to continue to make his Porsche payments for him. Is there something you can spray on the deck to keep grass from sticking?
Pam and silicone spray don't work. :)
I don't have any overhead lift points (tree) that I could hook a cable pull to. Any suggestions?

I usually raise the land pride mower up with the hydraulics and kneeling beside it spray water on the grass clippings. They get wet, and heavy and fall off. This works well if you do it 2-3 times per yr. Then in the fall I don't really have any thick dried globs to worry about.

I usually just pick it up with the three point and block it, put a rug on the ground and go at it with an air chisel. Makes pretty quick work of the dried grass.

I would second all the recomendations on getting a rear discharge. I have a KK with a side and would really like a rear discharge.

I have a 72" King Kutter that has stood up well for 5 years. I purchased it outright at the tractor auction new for $875. I had a woods before that, good mower also but pricy. I took the KK past the NH dealer that sells both and expected to trade it on what ever I could deal on. Bottom line I can get a new KK for $700 diff, or a Woods for $1000, so back to the auction co. and sell my present mower outright or keep it!

I own a 60" RM550 Woods mower, and my brother has a 60" FM60 KingKutter, both bought new. Both mowers are gear over belt units. I paid something like $1600 for the Woods, and my brother paid about $900 for his KingKutter. Both units seem about the same ruggedness, steel and blade thickness, etc. Most people credit Woods with being much heavier duty, but the KingKutter actually weights more (610 pounds vs. 500 pounds). I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

The Woods is much, much better in terms of fit and finish and documentation; KingKutter paint is horrible, and the owner's manual isn't too hot either. On the other hand, the KK comes standard with an anti-scalp roller on the front center of the deck, whereas it's an expensive (something like an additional $170) option on the Woods. In two years of cutting, neither mower has had any problems of any kind. I'd rate the quality of the cutting job of both mowers about identical, which, I guess, is what matters.

Bottom line is that I like my Woods mower more. But not 800 bucks more.

Here are the web pages of the two mowers:

(click on "Turf and Grounds," then "Finish Mowers," then "Rear Mount," then "60-72"

Good luck, have fun, and above all don't forget an overrunning clutch!

Brian,
I've got the Woods RM660 side discharge 6'. A little pricey, but I don't think you can buy better, and I don't expect to ever wear it out.
Does a great job. Sandy

I thought I posted a message but it seams to have dissappeared....I have a King Kutter. I like it a lot. It has grease fittings everywhere, unlike the brand I saw at central tractor. It seems pretty heavily built, but the paint job is real bad.....I might paint mine 2N grey this year.

I wished I'd have gotten the rear discharge model, because as the grass gets deep, a six fut cut leaves a windrow you can almost bale!

I wrote a comparison of mowing with a 5 footer or six footer about a month ago....a 8N and a 5 footer seems to be a good match, and a 2N/9N and a 6 footer seem to work well. It's all about gearing.

Take Care, Steve

What a coincidence! I'm at work and have just finished doing a pre-season PM on the company's Land Pride mower. Overall, I'd judge the LP's quality as above average. One thing on a negative note... The wheels are sort of 'splayed out' at angles from the front-rear axis of the mower. This puts stress on their mounting points on the deck and has resulted in some cracks that have required us to do some welding relatively early in the mower's life. On the other hand, this mower sees use on some very rough ground and has had the original pneumatic tires replaced with solids. Overall, it has held up well to treatment from various summer temp. workers which varies from careful attention to the task clear on down to brain-dead stupid. I'd buy one for myself.

Regards,
Darryl

I have a King Kutter which I would rate fair.

Here's another one you can look at. Haven't seen their mowers, but the things I have seen look good.

You might want to consider a Bush Hog brand. Bush Hog makes all kinds of mowers, including bush hog type (single blade) and finish mowers. My brother has a 6' Bush Hog finish mower and it works great. It's better than a King Kutter and every bit as good as a Woods or Land Pride, but priced lower. He got his at a Case/Intl dealer in Michigan. Check the web site www.bushhog.com to find a dealer near you.

I forgot about Bush Hog. I did look at a 5 foot bush hog brand finish mower, but it looked highly abused and misused, there is a Bush Hog dealer about 30 min away... brian

I have an older Woods model RM59 mounted on my NAA. I bought it used for 250, spent 50 or so on it and it mows just great. Solid construction. Newer ones have 4 wheels and you don't need to use limit chains. This one uses a large flywheel and fan belt to run things, no gear box.

I have a similar mower with the flywheel and limit chains, bought used. How can you tell what model it is Brian?

Mine is 84 inch and is just a little too much at times for my 1950 8N. My next one will be 72 inch.

We have a Land pride and the first one we had we kept for 9 yrs. It was trouble free, with no maintainance done over those 9 yrs. It cut better than the wheel horse riding mower. It was quiet and at 6 ft even my 2N mows well with it. We got rid of the first because land pride changed some specs and replacemnt parts were rumored to be starting to be hard to find for the particular model we had.(We hadn't needed any but I broke the blade bolt off in one of the spindles and the service folks told us if we messed up a spindle we might not be able to find a new one)So we traded up for a new land pride last yr. I really like this mower and would recommend it. We went with the 25-72 (72 inch cut and 25 series is the air tunnel design which "lifts the grass"). Maybe just hype but the cut is fantastic!

Of the brands that I've personally owned, I'd choose KingKutter for economy and Land Pride for quality. I'd guess that if you're only doing a couple of acres the KingKutter would be fine. If you're doing a park I'd look for something heavier duty.
