Installing a Sherman Hi-LO on an 8n without screwing up

A friend of mine wants to install one for me cheap. Given the stock gearing on the 8N I am apt to go for it.

Question:

My understanding is that the only work besides splitting the tractor and removing the long shaft and installing the hi-lo is drilling a one inch hole in the housing for the shifter. What's the probability of screwing that hole up?? Does anyone have the correct dimensions or instructions??

emails are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Go to the attached link, print out the page. Check off at least:
___ Sherman Trans: Step Up-Down-Reversing/Instr & Parts List (24)
___ Sherman Trans Template (3)

Enclose the $8.91 it costs (24+3 * .33) and you will receive a complete installation manual, service information, parts list, and a hole drilling template.

You probably will want to look that master list over and order other things as well. Every time I do, I find reasons to rationalize ever expanding my pile of papers.

Fargo,

I suggest you contact the N-Newsletter and get reprints of the Sherman manuals. They include installation instructions, especially how to shim the input shaft to the front of the transmission. If memory serves, the shift lever hole is 1 ¼ inches. The instructions recommend using a hole saw. The hole is a little larger than the shift lever to allow room for the grommet. Finding the location of the hole may require a bit of a head scratch as the templates originally used are probably hard to find. I temporarily installed mine, then marked the location of the shift lever on the inside of the transmission case. I then removed the Sherman and drilled a pilot hole from the inside. That ensured it was correctly located. Overall the installation is not a difficult job, but it does require you approach it with a little thought and care. Good luck,
David

Check previous postings under "Sherman". A couple weeks ago or so there were several postings about installing the overdrive and about hole locations. Drilling the hole in the exact location is tricky, but with time and patience, it can be located very accurately. Remember to fill the overdrive with oil before installing.
