Eric..... .general consenses is: it'll run without a thermostat, often times better with a thermo. The N-Cooling system is really overcooled according to those who have studied such things in college thermo-dynamics.

How-some-ever, there is also the general opinion that if your tractor is overheating, remove the thermostat. This is patentently incorrect. If your tractor is overheating, find out why. Is it clogged radiator tubes, cracked cylinder head, blown head gasket, incorrect ignition timing???

I'd put the thermostat in, they don't cost very much, and hot oil needs hot water, to drive out combustion by-products including water which causes rust and muck in the bottom of your oilpan.

Hope this helps..... ....Dell

I would think the engine would be more efficient if it ran at a constant temperature. The correct thermostat should keep the engine operating within its most efficient temperature range, especially in the winter. This sure seems like a GOOD thing for the engine's longevity!
(My 2 cents' worth)

Exactly right.

If the thermostat is missing, the engine will take a long time to reach normal temperature (if it ever does) in the winter. This is not a good thing.
