Fired up my 46 n for the first time since I bought it 2 months ago. (its been sitting for several years). There was a bad grinding noise down by the starter. After a visual check I thought I'd give her one more go only to find that the bendix would not ingage. After pulling the starter I see that the shaft that holds the bendix is seriously bent. 2 questions, one, what caused this, and two, can this be fixed or do I go for a new starter and bendix?

I think you done "bit the bullet....er...starter". New starter and bendix time.

The N-Starter has a longer shaft than most starters and because of leverage can be bent. I'd be very causious about WHY it bent? Your engine could have a "hydraulic lock". Pull all your sparkplugs and see if you can turn the engine over by hand.

Engines not run for a long time, can have a leaky head gasket and fill a cylinder up with radiator water. (most likely) or I have heard of the gastank syphoning gas down thru a bad carb float valve and up the intake manifold into the engine with an open intake valve. A reason, a lot of N-Tractor owners turn the valve off under the tank.

You should seriously consider one of the new "clutch" type starter drives, just a few dollors more. They don't kick out until the tractor engine RPM's get up to around 300 RPM's where the screw type "bendix" drive will unlock with just a 1 cylinder "pop". A lot of N-Owners will grind just about 1/8" X 1" notch at 2:00 to make any starter drive eazier to install.

Hope this helps..... ..Dell
