I have a 9N that is converted to a 12v -gd, I also have a 8N that is original 6v +gd, Can I use the 9n to "jump start" the 8N--I guess I'd need to isolate the "battree" on the 8N. the reason is the 9n starts like a dream but the 8N doesn't. Any one done this? I don't like "battree" explosions and I'm also worried about the points on the 8n frying out. (lucky guy to have this kind of problem eh) This will only be a temprary prob til this winter when I bring the 8N home and go thru it....Thanks

You can safely jump start the 8N by jumping directly to the post on the starter.Polarity will not matter as the starter is bypolar and the rest of the electrical system will not be affected when jumping this way.
Just be double sure that the tractor that is being started is out of gear and preferably someone in the seat with the clutch depressed and disengauged to assure no one gets run over. The neutral safety mechanism will be deafeated while jumping directly to the starter post.

Bi-polar, eh? That explains everything!

The guys at the tractor auctions do it all day long by connecting to the starter, NOT the Battery...
Assuming you have a Positive ground system on dead unit.....

1:Hook cables to running 12 V Tractor. Red to Positive, Black to Negative. Use the metal on the tractor to connect to grounded terminal on the 12 V runner.

2: Hook Negative cable directly to Starter cable at the starter

3: CHECK YOU ARE IN NUETRAL!!!!! !!Better yet to have another person on tractor, brakes set, clutch in also!
4: Touch positive cable to frame of tractor to start tractor. This assumes you have ignition on and the battery has enough umph to fire the coil.
5: Do not make a practice of cranking for any extended length of time as you can burn out starter with 12 volts.

Much better cure would be to go thru the coil and distributor and ignition switch on the 8N, so it will start easier. My 2N had been a bear to start, but when I replaced the coil with one from Ford and set the points correctly, it now starts instantly. Cool, huh?...

By the way.... It may be a good idea to recheck point gap at all 4 lobes on the distributor cam. Mine seems to have 4 different gaps, as if it was machined incorrectly. The bushings are fine, no play in the shaft , yet the points open .008 -.020 depending on the location... Made the tractor act like it had a bad cylinder when I set it on the .020 lobe.. I set it on the .008 lobe and once again I have 4 cylinders...

FWIW, you've probably got a bent distributor shaft.
