The original 8N muffler was not loud and actually had a sound simalir to the modle A Ford.I think that most of the replacement 8N mufflers now a days are just a reasonable facimile of the real thing.
Just wait till you are as old as that old tractor and you won't be nearly as irratated with noise because you won't be able to hear it.
As to the question about restricting the ext with a quieter mufffler,I don't think it would have any effect on the operation or be detremental to the engine etc.

Zane,
For my 2N I use a muffler originaly design for a Volkwagen Golf.
I only ckeck the diameter of the pipe and size of the muffler.
My tractor now run well and is not to noisy.
Regards.
Daniel

Yes, you can. You just have to get an adaptor to fit the muffler you want to use. I put a flat oval car muffler on one and adapted some muffler hangers to fit it under one of the step pads and then stuck about 14 inches of pipe out the back so that it ended about 4 inches past the axle. I did this on a working tractor, not a show tractor, and the guy says it works fine. I also adapted a motorcycle muffler to a lawn mower and it made a vast improvement over the beer can looking thing that was on it. Can't hurt to experiment. You can't make it as quiet as a car because the exhaust system is so exposed and not insulated from the operator like in a car. But it will be a big difference.
