I am thinking of switching my 48 8n with a front mount distributor over to 12 volt. Does anyone know exactly what 12 volt coil I need? The reason I was thinking of changing the coil to 12 volt is I think the 6 volt one that is on it now may be breaking down when it gets hot and the best price I can find on a new one is $60. Thanks for your time!!!!! ! Mark

I haave converted my 9N front mount ignition to 12-volt system. I am using a 12 volt coil. The coils keep going bad. Is anyone having this problem and do you have a solution?

Mike

CT Farm and Country (Central Tractor) catalog number 2121-20 for $25.50. (98 catalog). Phone 1 888 8CT FARM if you're not close to one.

The part number I usually see (universal?) for the 12-volt front-mount coil is 9N12024-12V.

They're not very solid, though.

If you don't care too much about "correct", email me for instructions to adapt an old coil to accept a "normal" (cylindrical) coil. I've done it to my 2N and it practically starts by pointing your finger in the starter's general vicinity.

Could you please tell me how to convert the square 6v coil to work with a modern cylindrical 12v coil? Is there a need for an 12v ignition (ceramic) resistor? thanks,Trey

BOb, The original owner of my 9N had modified the
coil to a Standard but I am not happy with the
mounting Point (under the gas tank, above starter). I am changing back to original but will keep the modified assembly (drilled old Coil) for
a backup. Where do you mount the Coil in your modification ?

Thanks

Where do you mount the Coil in your modification ?

I've got an alternator on mine, so I mounted the coil upside down on the back of the alternator where I can get to it easily. The one I used (from a 76 BMW 530i) already had one of those mounting straps that only takes one bolt to clamp it on to something.

Though it's nice to keep as much water away from it as you can, it's not vital. My upside down mounting was prompted more by a desire to protect my clumsy self from a nasty jolt than a desire to keep it out of the rain.

I am changing over to a regular round coil, I pull the old coil apart and will make external connections so future coil changes will be easy Iamalso going to put in resistor and by pass it so that I can start on 12volts.
