tranny whine

I revived a non-running 8n and all is well except a whine in the tranny area. With the clutch is depressed, the noise disappears. When in neutral and clutch engaged it whines. When in gear and moving it whines and is relative to speed and load. It does quiet down when moving down hill with back pressure against the drive. When split, the gears looked to be in excellent condition and turned freely by hand, so I thought it best to leave well enough alone! The clutch and throw out bearing are new. Are there gears engaged when in neutral? Any suggestions on where to start? It is annoying at times but wonder if it is something that requires attention or if I should just learn to live with it. Your input would be appreciated!

I had the same problem with my 8N. My input shaft bearing was getting rough, pitted spots. Replaced the bearing and solved the problem. Quiet as she caan be now. Good luck!

Pull your input shaft and inspect the bearing surface milled into the end of the shaft. I'll bet a six pack your looks just like mine did in this pic. This is usually caused by water in the tranny oil corroding the surface. Unfortunately, there is no cost effective ways to fix this - the entire shaft has to be replaced.

TP..... ...think about it. When you push down on yer clutch pedal, only the new THROWOUT bearing is moving and surprize NO noise. When yer in NEUTRAL and clutch out, yer tranny INPUT bearing and input GEAR is turning yer 1-piece counter-shaft. Sliding output gears are NOT turning. (why? 'cuz yer in neutral) When yer back-coasting, yer rearwheels are providing reverse pressure to yer tranny sliding gearshaft, gears and counter-shaft and NO whine.

With the above logic, the ONLY gearset that rotates during ALL conditions of "whine" is yer COUNTER-SHAFT.

Yer sliding gears and counter-shaft have "clearance" shims; p/n: 9N-7135-A,F,G, shim, tranny bearing retainer, 0.003, 0.005, 0.012, A/R. Surprizing enuff, tranny bearing pre-load is a function of turning resistance (20in-oz) not gear clearance. Not many mechanics have in-oz spring gauges.

Me? Iff'n I can't slide the gears back'n'forth with a lever and have NO NOTICEABLE slop and can still hand-turn then I'm probably good. Iff'n I can't hand-turn, its TOO TIGHT. Simple, eh?

My advice, depending upon degree of annoyance, unless yer poppin' outta gear, LEAVER BEE. Iff'n it really bothering you, I predict you'll haffa tranny rebuild in yer future. Its not rocket science. And ALWAYS replace the tranny input shaft seal. ($3, cheap) ..... ..Dell

Did you inspect the front tranny bearing while you had it apart?

Should have at least replaced the front tranny seal there, if you had it split.
