Get a test lamp... hook the gator clip to the post on top of the coil, and then probe the battery hot. Do this with the ignition switch off... now crankt he tractor over... does the test lamp blink?, continously glow, or never come on?

post back the results of the test to get the diagnosis.

Sound guy,

I have the same problem as "aggravated 9N owner". Have replaced distributor, points, condenser etc. With test lamp on coil I get blinking light when cranking, but zero spark in the secondary wiring. This 9N is 12V.

Thanks.

It is important for you to tell us if your tractor has a 6 volt or 12 volt electrical system. The troubleshooting is different based upon the configuration of your engine.

You said it is a 9N, so the distributor will be in front of the engine. You did not say if you have voltage to the top of the coil; if not, your problem is 'upstream'. Assuming you have voltage to the coil, most 'no spark' problems w/ a front mount are as a result of the pigtail on the end of the coil not making contact w/ the hollow headed brass screw in the distributor, or a short to ground in the distributor. Your troubleshooting is going to be a lot easier if you have a meter; just look for the open (or closed) circuit. If you do not have a meter, remove the distributor and the coil. W/ the distributor off of the tractor, put the coil on it. Does the pigtail make a good contact w/ the brass screw? If so, use your meter, or test light, and follow the circuit inside of the distributor. The most common short is the condenser wire. Re-check the point gap at .015 & run the card or new dollar bill through the points again.

Please be sure to post back & let us know what the fix was. We all learn something if you tell us what worked!

Do you have a voltmeter, multi-meter?
Can you see tractor ammeter jiggle when turn on ignition (with points closed)?
