I know that the 8N is the first with an actual air cleaner. Is their something I can do to put some kind of a filter on my 2N, short of using an 8N part? It just seems a carb would work better and longer without dust flowing through.

2n's also came with an air cleaner, the oil bath type. you're probably missing the whole works. Take a look at the pictures of N's on this Board and you can get some idea of what you're missing exactly.
