I HAVE A 1947 2N WITH A 12 VOLT SYSTEM. IT HAS BEEN STARTING EASILY FOR QUITE A WHILE. I ACCIDENTALLY LEFT THE KEY ON AND THE BATTERY WENT DEAD. I'D NORMALLY JUST PUT A BATTERY CHARGER ON IT, BUT I TRIED JUMP STARTING IT INSTEAD. IT WOULD NOT START. THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER AND OVER, BUT WOULD NOT START. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES FOR THE BATTERY TO CHARGE, AND THEN IT STARTED WITH NO PROBLEM. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS? I'M JUST CURIOUS BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS TURNING OVER FAST ENOUGH TO CRANK DURING THE JUMP.

Here's the deal: your battery did not have enough juice to supply the coil. Pull starting will turn the alternator, but not fast enough. You need an ever so slight amount of charge in the battery for this to work. That's why it works sometimes. My guess is that that battery was really dead.

Sometimes, if you really pull the tractor fast, you can get it to go, but it's not reccomended. Charging the battery a little is better.

This is about the only time a tractor with a magneto is better.

I've had that happen a few times to me... When I left the power switch on, the battery would fry the coil. To check this , take the distributor off and set it on the tractor. Now with the coil still attached to the distributor, run a wire from the coil to the positive battery terminal...Then, set the entire distributor on the negative post of the battery. Now , spin the distributor and watch to see if the points fire. If they do, then the coil, points, and condensor is not the problem. Make sure the points are opening...sometime they get welded together. If all this seems ok, then work you way backwards. Take the wire that normally runs to the coil, and with the power switch on, ground the wire to see if any power is comming out. If not, try bypassing the power switch. I have had a couple of switches go bad on me. I'm not sure what else could possibly go wrong with these tractors. Not much to the things, once you start playing with them. Oh well, hope this helps. Sorry I can't explain things simpler. Good Luck Mark Baham
