(2N, 12v, front mount dist.)

When setting basic timing as per the FO-4 manual, I can only get it to about 3/8 of an inch. I need to move the plate down more, but am at the end of the slot. I got this set with the last set of points, but was at the end of the slot. They wore out (couldn't get proper gap), so I purchased a new set at NAPA. Has anyone else had this problem. Would it hurt anything to elongate the slot more so that I could get the correect timing. Or is there something else that I need to look for. TIA

Well yes I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.third party image Sorry, couldn't help myself.
I have tried every combination of placing the straight edge along the tangs that I could think of and 3/8" was the closest that I came.

Yes, there is wear in the advance assembly. About a year ago I re-bushed the weights, but the posts that they rotate about had quite a bit of wear also. The springs seem weak, but are not borken. In fact only one the weights is pulled back as it should be.

And to answer another poster. Yes, the rub block had worn down, but the points have been in use since 1999.

If you are doing the "bench" timing procedure correctly, and it's that far off, the centrifugal advance (located behind the breaker plate) has worn out, has broken springs, or is otherwise "out of whack".

There have even been reports of new distributor shaft/advance assemblies being "out of time" right out of thebox, as well.

You said they (wore out)!Do you mean the rubbing blocks wore out due to a lack of lubrication of the distributor cam and/or a rough cam, which can be smoothed out by putting in lathe at low speed and filing with a fine tooth mill file.I hope you have the point mounting plate retainer installed. I bet you can put the timing dead in the center of the slot and never know the difference..If you move it too much the concave screw will be offsided from where the spring pigtail on the coil needs to hit.
