Used my last filter, looking for a couple spares for the shelf. O'Reilley has it for 4.99, Car Quest has it for 6.44. The CQ guy swares that his supplier sells second line parts to O'Reilley and he has even personally cut them apart and they are different. What do the experts say about this?

Keith - equivelent filter does not mean it is the same (and I know you know this). I have seen the insides of oil filters on some test a guy posted on the internet, and all filters ARE NOT built the same. Just because the filter will fit, does not mean you should use it.

There are two schools of thought here, and I am pretty sure I know where you sit. One way says only 25 percent of the oil gets filtered anyway - no big deal on which filter you use. Another school of though says ONLY 25 percent of the oil gets filtered, you should clean that 25 percent as good as possible.

Get the Wix, they are darn good filters and built well. If you don't get a Wix, get ANYTHING but a Fram!

Autozone has STP S8A for 3.29, which crosses to Wix 51515.

Yer kidding me.. they actually have one that crosses over??

What's the number? I'd love to have a couple 2$ filters on hand for new machines so i can run a short oil change as a flush. I like to get cheap supertech oil and do like a '3 hour' change on all new machines I get.. having a 2$ fitler would be even better as well..

I'm guesing they have one that crosses to the motorcraft fl1a then.. due to it's popularity with older ford automotive products??

I don't have the number handy, and some will probably tell me I am committing a sin, however if you were to look at my diesel Ford 5000 you would find a Super Tech filter on it. Same thing on the oil, but it is 15W40 diesel oil. Been finding the oil on clearance probably because no one wants it, and are buying the rotella. I clean up the shelf. I guess I have seen too many old tractors running oil that I know has not been changed for years, yet they keep on going reliably, and tired of the high prices on name brand stuff. I run the cheap oil and filters and change it regularly, and have not had a problem. I know at one time the oil was quaker state, but have not heard lately.

I don't see my cross reference guide, but I'm sure they do. They are made by Champion Laboratories, the same company that makes the Mobil One and K&N oil filters.

If your only interested in price then you need to price the silver line filters from NAPA. If you cut them open they will be as good a filter as the other two brands. Napas gold filter would be a 1515 and the silver line would be a 21515.

To go from a NAPA gold # to a WIX, just put a "5" in front of the number....1515 NAPA becomes a 51515 Wix!! Simple....An O'Reilly Microguard (house brand) filter is made by Purolator....a good quality unit. I wouldn't put a Fram on anything I own...cut a Fram open, then a cheap O'Reilly open, and you can SEE how much better the CHEAPER one is constructed....once Fram may have been good, but it's just the NAME you buy now, NOT the quality!!!
