I have a 1951 8n and the lift works fine on level ground but going forward up a steep hill the lift won't raise. This happens when I'm using my 4' scrape blade or even with no attachments on the tractor. If I'm going down hill it works fine. It only happens going up hill. I've had my pump checked and a new piston and rings installed on the lift but this did not help. I've filled the transmission with 5 gallons of 80w-90w GL-5 gear oil. Are there any adjustments I've missed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

An interesting problem!

Any chance that your pto or its clutch is slipping back and disengaging when you go up steep hills?

When I was 16 years old and lived in Bossier City La. I had a job that was across town in Shreveport. I had a nice 38 Ford business coupe and I had to negotiate a steep hill every day on the way to work. The car would not go up the hill because the fuel pump was marginal. I simply turned around at the bottom of the hill and went up just fine in reverse.Back then everybody understood and just waited untill I got out of the way.
Options---
Fix the lift linkage,
clean out all the gook around the pump,
Go up the hill backwards!
