I have just bought my first tractor and discovered I was born to brush hog. The tractor is a 1947 with front distributor. Here is my problem, after hogging about an hour the tractor starts to sputter, surge and buck, and just quit. It won't start till it cools down. I go for lemonade, and come back after awhile and it runs great for the next hour. I've checked the fuel flow right down to the drain in the float bowl and it seems fine. Spark is ok too. Could it just be vapor lock? If so, how can I fix this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I also have a '47 8N, and I too was having
problems with dying after a while. I found a
screwdriver in the gas tank that was knocking crud down and temporarily causing problems with the carb. (You might want to look and see what your gas tank looks like!)

Steve..... ."spark is ok"..... I don't think so.....

Front mount N-tractors coils when they are going bad, its generally after about hour of running that warms them up so that some of the turns of the coil short out and you loose enuff of your sparkies that it quits running until it cools down and starts outputting enuff sparkies to run for another hour.

Another obscure electrical problem that exhibits the same results of not enuff sparkies..... is a gunked up ignition switch contacts that heat up and drop the voltage to the coil so you don't have enuff sparkies to run. Let it cool and it "fixes itself" until it gets hot again.

Simple check, next time your tractor quits, jumper around the ignition switch, if it starts right up, its the switch, if it doesn't start right up, its probably the coil. Replace the obvious.

Clasical vapor lock is not a problem with a gravity feed no pump fuel system. Howsomever..... mud daubbers have been know to plug up the little ol' air vent on top the tank (where you can't see or get to it). If cracking open your fuel cap solves your problem, Don't tighten the cap and develop a vacuum in your fuel tank.

So the're 3 possibles for your problems.

Hope one of them helps and N-joy..... ...Dell
