I've decided to buy a 5 foot King Kutter with a 40hp gearbox. The tractor shop has them for $550. Is this a reasonalble price?

KingKutter what? Finish mower? Rotary mower? Bush hog? Roto-tiller? Makes a big difference. That would be peanuts for a finish mower, though.

The King Kutter is an economy model. Compare the price to a Bush-Hog brand and then compare construction and features and finish. If you can see the big $$ difference as being worth it, go with the Bush-Hog. Otherwise, the King-Kutter will do an adequate job.

$550 is an average price for these things. I'd be more inclined to shop farm sales and try to pick up a used heavy-duty model for $300-500. If the deck of a used mower is not rusted out or badly bent, the only other thing that gets expensive is the gearbox. Blades are relatively cheap, although sometimes difficult to replace.

Dunno about KK bush hogs, but I just bought a 60 inch finish mower for $849 on sale. Normally about $949 to $999. So if yer talkin about a finish mower, go for it. Cheep.
