when something is attached to pto and the clutch is depressed it will not disengage and the tractor keeps moving. it appears that the clutch is completely adjusted out. does it need a new clutch. this is my first tractor.

thanks

Jim,

If you are using a brush hog, you need an over-running coupler. The NAA's PTO is driven directly out off of the transmission, so even when you disengage the clutch, the momentum of the blade on your brush hog continues to spin, turning the PTO, geared to transmission, driving your tractor until blade momentum is lost.

An over-running coupler is a NECESSARY safety device that works as a ratchet, engaging with drive-line, free-wheeling when clutch is depressed, eliminating the brush hog from "driving" your tractor.

This problem was eliminated with the introduction of the "live" PTO, unfortunately, live PTO was a new and rare option on NAA's. You have a good tractor with live hydraulics, but you need the over-running coupler for all high momentum implements.

Keep on Tractor-N,
Joe

If you mean that when something with inertia, like a rotary mower is driven off the PTO and depressing the clutch does not stop it quickly, you do not have a clutch problem. The mower is driving the tractor thru the pto shaft while the engine is disengaged from the pto. The clutch works under any other condition? If so you just need an overriding clutch on the mower. This allows the mower to spin down while the tractor can be stopped . Sound right?
