My 2n starts well but seems to be a little rough at idle. In fact it doesn't quite idle as slow as I would like. I get black smoke from the exhaust and plugs look blackened with soot. I adjusted the idle screw but it doesn't do much,in fact it runs best when I remove it completly. It has a grove around the taper about 1/8 of an inch from the tip. I think it is time to rebuild. I tighten the bolts on the carb to the manifold, they were a little loose maybe it helped somewhat.I called my local NAPA store they need the carb number for the rebuild kit. Anyone out there know the number?
My ser# on the 2n is 183906, Whats the going price on a kit? Thanks for your help.

Gary, your carb should be a Marvel-Schebler TSX 241 (or similar in the TSX series). Prices will vary from about $12 to $40, depending on the type of kit and who's selling it. The less expensive ones are usually called minor or tuneup kits. They will contain; a new idle needle and seat, float needle and seat, gaskets and shaft seals. The major kits have all the above plus a new throttle shaft and sometimes a main jet. It varies from different manufacturers.

It is a very good idea to flatten the mating halves of the carb while you have it apart. Also make sure you replace the seals on the choke and throttle shafts. Some people are afraid to take these apart, but it's not to difficult and very important to prevent air leaks around these shafts.

Most of these carbs are "air idle" adjusting. This means that when you turn the idle needle you are varying the amount of air that goes thru the idle circuit. This in turn controls how much fuel is pulled thru the idle circuit. Any air getting into the carb/manifold system at the wrong point will greatly disrupt this system.

It's not at all hard to work on these carbs. Just pay attention to where things are when you take it apart, clean it really well and go slow putting it back together.

HTH, John

Gary, my 9n has the same symtoms as yours, and from reading the archives I think it might be an air leak between the two halfs of the carb...I have it apart and as I suspected the two halfs do not match well...I'm improving this with an emery cloth and a flat surface and I thought I'd try two gaskets as well..... hopefully this weekend I'll see if it helps...Brian.
