I'm getting ready to try to fix the leaky rear main seals in a recently rebuilt engine. I've collected lots of tips from the archives, and most of them don't contradict each other, but I have one question. When you put the rope seals in place, someone recently suggested that you don't cut the seals flush. Do you cut them at all or just leave nubs?

Larry: No matter how much you push those seals in the seal grooves, when you do the final installation and tighten everything down the seal will push a little more into the groove, and hence, the ends will pull back just a little bit more. Leave a little of the seal above the block and the bearing cap and use some RTV sealant on the ends also. Don't leave so much that the seal material gets caught up between the metal surfaces of the block and the bearing cap. By the way, better permatex that rear seal retainer ring very well also. My $.02

I usually find a socket of the same diameter as the crank and seat the seals with the socket and a hammer, then cut them flush and put a dab of rtv on the ends before assembly. it works well for me.
