Hello . Heve a question in regaurds to the Break pedals . First did like the TO and TE 20s did the Ford 9 & 8N's have a master break peadal on them . Also when one lookes at the 8N compared to the later Fergason taractors where the had the independent break pedals one on eather side to the rear and a master on the front , on the 8N with them both on the same side , and more tot he point , oposite to each other rather than side by side , to do a normal break they must have been a bit difficult to press evenly . And as for the 9n where I belive the pedals were on oppsite sides , but on the left the clutch pedal right next to the break [ I could be wrong ] unless ther was some sort of lack together or master then stopping must have been a dodgey affair . Can anybody comment on this matter . PS: I am from the UK . David

My 2N has a lever that connects the left brake with the clutch. If you push the clutch all the way it applies the break, you can still you the break for turning and not affect the clutch. I belive the 9N were this way to.

David...I don't think the 9N/2N brakes were designed into the tractor for stopping so much as turning. Top speed on them is pretty slow(12 mph?)unless you had some hills on the property.

By the time the 8N came along, it had more speed & heavier mounted implements to stop with. Never had any trouble using the pedals on one side to stop straight. My big feet have more trouble using 'em to turn.

What's the master brake you speak of on the Fergy? My uncle's TO-30 has a pedal on each side.

hi jeff, the fergy TO 30 has right and left hand brakes on opisit sides of the main housing like a 9n, , but it has another master pedle on the right front floorboard that operates both brakes togeather,

Dan from Colorado was right. When the clutch and left brake are adjusted properly, the left brake is engaged by the clutch pedal when it is pushed down. In theory, a panic stop would involve depressing clutch on the left, brake on the right.

My feet are on the small side, and I have a very difficult time operating the two brake pedals at the same time, much less evenly. I have to wear boots to do it; in tennis shoes, I can only operate both at once if I turn my foot out so the toe points off to the right and I can operate the brakes with my foot "longwise". I know a lot of women drive 8Ns, though, so maybe there's a standard way people with smaller feet do it. But I think a lot must depend on the operator. (Eric, there are times I wish I had size 13 feet for sure! :-)

I don't know if this helps whatever you're thinking about, but for what it's worth...

first, there is no master brake pedel on the fords like the fergy has, the 8n has both pedels on the same side, my jubilee has the same brake setup as the 8n, and there is only about a 1/2 inch gap between the 2 pedels so its no problem to step on both brakes at the same time especially with size 13e clodhoppers like mine are, but it is important that both brakes be adjusted the same [ see the service manuel for the procedure] and all the brake componets must be in good operating condition, then remember the fords will only hit around 12 mph or so flat out, unlike say a silver king r-38 or udlx minnie mo that can hit 40 mph in road gear,that aint for the faint of heart!

I think you have it figgered out. On the 9N and 2N tractors, the right brake pedal is on the right side, the left brake pedal is on the left, just outboard of the clutch pedal. I think (haven't looked at mine) there's a way to cause the left brake to apply when you mash the clutch pedal, so you only need one foot on left side, and can use the other foot on the right side. Me, I just use the right brake most of the time, but the only thing I use my 2N for is driveway grading duty in the summer.

I didnt find his post any harder to read than many of the regular posters here and they live in America.I dont even try to decipher their lingo anymore, thats what they make the back button and the up and down cursor for [I find I use them ALOT].

My 1940 9N has right brake at the right foot and the clutch and left brake at the left foot. During normal use I have had not ill results in stopping. However If running down the road in 3rd gear full boar down hill, a need to make a fast panic stop may cause more than just panic. No master brake to operate both sides at once on the 9N unless it could have been added as a after market item? From most accounts the brakes on the N's are ok but not nearly as effective as many other setups.
