What happens if you leave the gas on? Will gas leak into the engine and make it hard to start? Will gas get into the oil and cause low oil pressure because of the dilution effect?

I do not turn my gas off....I do not have any problems. Those that do, should fix their carbs.

Hi Martin, I told my friend to always shut his off and last week end he called and said it wouldn't start,so I when't over and he swore he shut the gas of. I am shure glad it did not start, I found the crank case about 2 gallons over full with gas!! Now I would never have believed it had I not seen it. Drained and put fresh oil and it started, No apparrent problems. I went out yesterday to start mine after a coulple of weeks and found that I had left the gas on,I couldn't believe that I could have done that, I think a Leperchaun played a trick on me,LOL, any way mine just started hard and puffed black smoke for 20 seconds. Hope this answers your ?? DuaneNca

If you have a working carb with any float nothing will happen. If not you may see gas leaking out the bottom of the carb. It might flood the carb a little. I don't think it gets worse than that, or at least that's as bad as it has gotten for me. In order for it to flood enough to get into engine oil it would have to flood the carb then go up the manifold and past the rings. Not likely although probably not technically impossible. You wold have to have a full tank of gas for pressure, a really bad carb, and really worn rings, and leave in on for a long time.

Or you could just shut it off.

About 2 years ago, the float on Phoebe The Ford must have stuck and she leaked about 2 gallons of gasoline into the crankcase. When I turned her over, she fired quickly and tossed about 2 gallons of diluted oil all over the left side of the garage - - - out of the oil fill tube. It was a one-time event and it was time to change the oil anyway.

Or it will 'gravity' feed up, through the open valves and into the cylinders and not leak down.
Turn it over with a cylinder full of fluid and see what breaks.
Not pretty...

That's bout the only time you'd wish for a very weak battery, maybe it would lock up and not bust something.
