Went to change points on my 39 9N and found that the distributor to block mounting bolt (closest to the generator) wasn't there. After finishing up, I went searching in my bolt bucket for a replacement and could not find one to fit. Is this a special bolt? If so, does anyone know where I can find one?

If you got a 5/16 bolt and it was "too small", it might be that the hole got stripped out. Far as I know, both bolts are the same size and length... unlike the governor bolts.

That's a possibility... you may have to pop the distributor off, (no big deal) and check out the discrepant hole with a mirror and flashlight.... Good Luck duey

I went to the hardware store and got the next size bolt smaller than a 3/8 and it is too small.

You have two choices. The first being to reinstall the distributor as you found it. The second being to use a helicoil insert. However to do that you would need to remove the cover so that you could drill for the insert.

It is a 5/16" bolt - not sure of the length though. Measure your one bolt you have. Funny, but my Master Parts Manual does not even give the dimensions.

Good luck,
Dan

I have a reproduced "Assembly and Service Parts Catalog" for models 9N - 2N - 8N tractors 1939 - 1952 (Reproduced under licensing agreement with Ford Motor Company). It gives the dimensions of about 99% of the bolts, but I have found a few that it doesn't (like the head bolts for one). I guess I need to locate a true MPC...

Thanks,
Dan

Nothing special, just take the other one to a hardware or bigbox store and match it up. simple ah.

Ken,
I can see going to a Home Depot or Lowe's around here and asking for a grade 5, 5/16"-18 x 1" hexhead bolt. I'd consider myself lucky if I found someone who understood "bolt." If they knew exactly what I wanted, call the paramedics.
