Hydraulic pump valve chamber gaskets

You may remember a few weeks ago I pulled my hydraulic pump out to give it a thorough cleaning and discovered very thick gaskets that were almost cemented on to the pump housing and valve chambers. So, after scraping for hours and discovering Permatex gasket remover spray (thanks for the tip), I finally got the mating surfaces clean again. I got the replacement gaskets in and they were normal paper thin gaskets, I asked if this would work, and was told it would. So, I put them on and torqued the four bolts to 50 lbs. and went to install it yesterday - NO GO! The thinner gaskets let the valve chamber covers move closer towards the housing, and does not allow enough gap for the PTO shifter to slide into place. I wrestled with that pump underneath the tractor for an hour until my arms gave out, nothing doing.

Anyone else have this problem? Did you find the correct gaskets or shave the PTO shifter housing?

Darn cheap aftermarket crap!

Dan

UPDATE in reply to Dan, 10-25-2006 04:53:22
I just got back from the New Holland dealer, their gaskets are much thinner than the ones I scraped off as well - but are thicker than the Tisco version. I may just slap these new ones on top of the Tisco ones and run two gaskets each side. With all four corners torqued down to 50 lbs., I do not think it will leak.

Anyone think I should use gasket sealer in this scenario?

Thanks,
Dan

No gasket sealer. It'll make the gaskets too slick and they'll blow out. They need the friction against the metal or each other.

Yep, I almost ran into that when I went through the hydraulics on one of my project tractors. The tractor guy where I get my parts had me double up the gaskets to avoid it. Worked fine.

There must have been a recent change in the gasket paper thickness. the set I bought 2-3 ys ago worked fine.

I made a set of gaskets for the last N pump I fixed. I left some overhang of the gasket where the PTO shoulder stabilizer mates with the pump housing. I too struggled with it for a long time before I finally figured out that the gasket material sticking out from under the pump chambers was interfering with it going back together. Had to drop the pump back down and cut the excess gasket material from that area. Then it went right in. DUH!

I got a call about this on the last set I sold. I no longer have’em listed cuzz I think this izz a problem that the manufacture needs to address. Only if everyone refuss’izz to sell’em will they fix the problem. Yes it would be ok to knock a little off the ears of the support. I have not called CNH to check on a OEM gasket.
I have used the aftermarket gaskets fer a long time and only ran into this one time on my own stuff. I got the grinder out and went at it.
